Wedding Bells – Our honeymoon plans

Now that the wedding is over, the big question on everyones lips is ‘where are you going on your honeymoon?’. We did go away to the Four Seasons in Hampshire the night after our wedding for a relaxing spa break, but that’s more of a mini-moon right?

Initially we planned to go to California in August. One of my oldest friends Sammie is getting married there and instead of going on an extravagant honeymoon, then a few weeks later making the journey across the pond, we thought we’d tie it all into one; spend a few days in Huntington Beach for the wedding and then go off just the two of us for some relaxing us time, maybe Catalina Island, wine country, somewhere in California neither of us have been.

Well this was the plan for so long, we planned to pay for it after the wedding but sadly after our mini-moon was over and the wedding vibe had gone, we sat down to work out our finances and it just wasn’t viable. If we’d paid for our wedding over the course of a year or two like most couples do then it would have been fine but because we waited and paid it all out over 3 pay cheques it made things a little tight. Pete works freelance so not only would we spend a fortune to go away but he also wouldn’t get paid for that time off so we’d end up spending pretty much the cost of the wedding again.

On top of moving house again and the various stag and hen do’s we’ve had/still got this year, it just wouldn’t have worked. We did discuss the possibility of just me going for 3 days to see the wedding but if you’re going to spend that kind of money on flights you want to be able to stay a bit longer and not be jet lagged the whole time you’re there.

So after a sad email to let my friend know I wouldn’t be making it, we’ve decided we’ll go somewhere next year. Once we’re settled in our new home we’ll start putting a little away each month and then when Pete can take some time off we’ll go somewhere luxurious.

Pete would like to go back to the Maldives, it’s where he proposed to me and will always have a special place in our hearts. I’d like to go somewhere different though; with so many places to see I find it such a waste to go to the same place twice. I’d love to go to Mauritius or The Bahamas; but then part of me would rather save money on flights, fly somewhere closer and spend a bit more on the hotel and activities. Somewhere in Europe we’ve never been like Italy or Santorini!

Well we have plenty of time to decide and save up so go ahead, throw your best honeymoon ideas at me! Where did you go for yours? Where would you go if you could choose again? Are you going on a honeymoon or did you decide to save your money for your home or family?

We haven’t decided on a location for our honeymoon yet either. We’re planning on taking a family trip though so we’ll have both kids with us! We’ve asked for money towards our honeymoon as wedding presents so I think that will help us get away next summer xx
