It’s the little everyday perks…

Sponsored post in association with American Express®

As parents, I feel like we’re always telling ourselves and each other that we need to treat ourselves once in a while ‘Book a spa day’, ‘let the grandparents take the kids for you to get a full night’s sleep’, ‘have a girl’s night out’ – these are all wonderful ideas of course but it’s the ‘once in a while’ part that gets to me. Why get through each stressful day with the thought that a reward is on the horizon when we can treat ourselves every day, giving us rewards on every horizon!

I am a huge advocate of making time for myself; the majority of the hours in my day are spent making my children’s lives magical and exciting so why not allow myself that same feeling each and every day too?

I’m not alone either. According to some new research by American Express**, the top ten treats that Brits treat themselves to are:
* Ordering a takeaway (30%)
* Reading a book (27%)
* Going out for dinner (26%)
* Watching a favourite film or TV show (23%)
* Having a lie in (22%)
* Going to the pub or bar (19%)
* Eating ice cream (18%)
* Having a bath (16%)
* Buying a new item of clothing or pair of shoes (16%)
* Going to the cinema (14%)

It’s why I’ve teamed up with them to share some of the perks that I enjoy every day.

As you can see from the nation’s top treats, this doesn’t always mean daily spa trips or nights out (as amazing as that would be); It’s the little things, the simple treats that bring each and every day an extra smile, laugh or feeling of bliss!

So, here my ten every day perks that I like to do to bring myself some extra happiness in a world of preschool runs, nappy changing and laundry:

1 – My morning cup of tea – Nothing says ‘good morning’ better than a nice cup of tea – milk and one sugar! I never feel quite ready to face the day until I’ve had mine and my son Jasper even joins me in the ritual now too!
2 – Facetiming my sister abroad – Having family that lives abroad can be really tough; but regular Facetime calls makes us feel so much more connected and really cheers me up when I’m missing her!
3 – Catching up on trashy TV – Oh the guilty pleasure that is TOWIE! I won’t even try to deny my love for reality TV as I love nothing more than catching up on all of my favourite shows once the boys are in bed!
4 – Taking photos – I’m a very sentimental person and, if I don’t say so myself, I have two rather scrumptious sons so capturing beautiful memories of them makes me so happy!

5 – Doing yoga – Yoga really helps me to relax and focus during a busy and hectic schedule so if I can’t find the time to go to the gym I’ll always make the effort to do a quick 10-minute online class at home.
6 – Having my nails done – This isn’t an everyday perk but it’s something I like to indulge in regularly and as it’s probably my only beauty treatment I have done, I do like to keep it up and head to my local salon every other week.

7 – Listening to my mindfulness app – another great way to focus and zen; sometimes toddler tantrums and work deadlines can make me feel so frantic, so taking ten minutes out to practice mindfulness makes such a difference to my mood.
8 – Buying myself flowers – I’m not ashamed to admit that if no one is there to buy me flowers – I’ll buy them for myself! Supermarket bunches are lovely but there’s nothing quite like a handpicked bunch of blooms from the florist and I truly believe that every woman should love themselves enough to buy themselves fresh flowers every week!

9 – Styling my hair – I’m too quick to chuck my hair up in a mum-bun most days but the days that I take a little bit of time to straighten, curl or simply style my hair I feel so much better about myself and ready to take on the day!
10 – Reading in bed – At the end of the day I love getting into bed and delving into a good read! I’m all about the thrillers and live for the kinds of books that I can’t put down … I don’t always appreciate it when I need to wake up early the next morning though!

    Lovely post, Jess. If we stop and think, there’s probably more everyday perks that we don’t consider as perks. Who doesn’t love a treat, too? L. xx

    I love standing under a hot shower in the morning just thinking. Also the first cup of coffee. Opening a brand new bottle of milk. Looking at family photos on the fridge. Just the simple things are the best.

    I totally agree with all of these. My husband works nights so I try to make my evenings (one my little one is in bed) all about me. It sounds selfish but it isn’t really. I watch a film or read a book, treat myself to a bath bomb or do my nails. It really helps rejuvenate me for the next day. I definitely need to start buying myself flowers more too!

    This is a fab post and so true. It’s not something I have ever thought about until recently. My partner and I very recently had our second baby, we got married and had an amazing family holiday together.. then it ended…. Everyone told me I would probably feel a bit blue as it was all over. Of course these things are amazing and its sad when they are over, but your right there are so many everyday things to enjoy!

    Fresh bedding and snuggles with both my babies is one of my favourites. My son is two and a half and isn’t so cuddly unless it’s just before bed. So I enjoy this A LOT!

    Anyway rambles. Alana x

    So true, whatever can bring us that moment of happiness or pleasure, however small we need to take it whenever we can, as we don’t always have time or the opportunity for days/nights off.

    Nothing better then that first brew but a cheeky snooze is definitely an everyday pleasure -not fussed on flowers but a square or 2 of chocolate and I’m in the zen zone! 😉
