Evenings can be a really stressful time in our household. When it comes to 4pm both boys are knackered but it’s too late for them to nap and too early for them to go to bed. They need entertaining but with rush hour it’s too late to go anywhere or start any big activities and I need to start cooking dinner and getting them ready for bed. There’s usually a reoccurring scene in my house which looks a little like me frantically chucking fish fingers in the over with a screaming baby in one arm and a toddler lying on the floor screaming at me to get him his cars that are already in his hands – you know the drill. I’m normally a sweaty mess willing my husband to walk through the door to take over whilst half willing him to not come home until I’m on top of things and also wondering why it’s 8pm and both boys aren’t fed, bathed and in bed yet.
No matter what I do the boys always have this ‘witching hour’ that’s more like 5 hours; so I’ve started trying to make my life a little easier by thinking ahead and getting organised. I get the boys pjs laid out while their bath is running; I tidy up the toys and switch to a calming activity like books or television and when it comes to dinner I plan ahead … okay I let someone else plan ahead for me!
We’ve used the Hello Fresh service a few times in the past and as soon as Jenson came along I knew I wanted to try it again. If you’re not familiar with Hello Fresh they’re an online service that chooses new and exciting meals for you, prepares the fresh ingredients and delivers them to your door each week. You can choose from Classic, Veggie or Family boxes each containing simple instructions and exact quantities of ingredients. You choose your desired delivery date, we always go for a Monday and the box arrives on our doorstep – no fussy food shop required! It’s even left there if we’re out as we live in a quiet close so I don’t even need to wait in. Plus the box contains cool packs to keep your food extra fresh!
The ingredients are all sourced from the best suppliers and include such a rainbow of nutritious goodness! There are often ingredients I’ve never tried before and some I’ve not even heard of!
Each week the Hello Fresh chefs create amazing recipes that really bring a bit of excitement into dinner times. I’m awful for cooking the same few meals over and over and I love how most of the meals Hello Fresh provide I’ve either never heard of or simply would never think to cook. That’s not to say they’re out there or anything, we’re not talking kangaroo and frogs legs, but restaurant style meals that would seem like too much effort if you didn’t have the exact ingredients and recipes right in front of you.
Here’s an example of one box of meals:
Sweet and Sour Pork with Bulgur Wheat
Creamy Leek and Mustard Chicken with Strir Fried Green Beans
Courgette, Broad Bean and Feta Orzotto with Pork Meatballs
Jamies Sizzling Steak Strip Fry with Tenderstem Broccoli and Noodles
The instructions are so easy to follow and it really has made dinner time so much less stressful! There are step by step guidelines, most with pictures and often helpful tips and tricks! Jasper even loves to get involved, helping us to empty the box when it arrives, naming the ingredients and then getting them all out when it’s time to cook. It’s made cooking a much more family orientated activity.
What’s great about Hello Fresh is that it’s so flexible. If you don’t like a meal you can request it not to be included again. You can also put a hold on your subscription if you’re going away or simply want a break from it. You can swap to an alternative style box of say you decide to go Veggie one week or you can increase the quantities to suit 4 people rather than 2 and vice versa.
Jasper is a really good eater and even though sometimes I may need to hold off on adding chilli or anything else that’s too spicy for him; I love that I can make this one meal for all of us – no faffing about with separate meals for everyone. I love how healthy they are with loads of veggies and Pete loves the flavoursome meat dishes included!
If you’d like to give them a go they do fab introductory prices and if you don’t get on with them, like I said before you can simply stop your subscription – it couldn’t be easier! You can also build up a great recipe book with all of the menus sent to you so if you do stop your subscription you still have practically a recipe book at home!
I’d definitely recommend it for busy families or simply someone who’d like to get a bit more adventurous in the kitchen!
